Saturday Salon – CCAM Welcomes Ted Kooser

Ted Kooser, who served as U. S. Poet Laureate from 2004 through 2006, will appear at the Clarinda Carnegie Art Museum on Aug. 12 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The reading of poems from his award-winning chapbook, AT HOME, will mark the museum’s first Saturday Salon.

Kooser has written numerous books of poetry, nonfiction, children’s books and special editions, earning awards that have included the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, a Nebraska Governor’s Arts Award, fellowship awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Nebraska Sower Award in the Humanities, four honorary doctorates and many recognitions for specific works. He continues to teach the writing of poetry halftime as a Presidential Professor at the University of Nebraska.

Kooser tells his students that, if he’s “gotten pretty good at this,” it’s because he “began writing poetry as a young kid” and that he has written daily for 50 years. In the last decade, he has matched his extraordinary passion for writing with a commitment to advocate for poetry reading. His newspaper column, American Life in Poetry, has an estimated circulation of 3,500,000 readers around the world, including adults and students of all grade levels.

Kooser lives with his wife, Kathleen Rutledge, in Garland, Neb., where he rises at 4:30 each morning to sift through the comings and goings of life on the land around him, looking for nuggets around which to build images. When he isn’t creating with words, he is doing so with pen and ink, pencil or brush.

After the reading and a short period for questions, CCAM will offer for sale copies of AT HOME that Kooser will be happy to sign. Visitors will also be invited for refreshments and to enjoy the museum’s landmark exhibition, Manual Neri: The Modernist Figure.
